Lisbon

Portugal

Lukas Hawkey

I’m from Lisbon, Portugal

I have lived in Lisbon all my life and it’s where I’ve spent all of my childhood.

I joined Youth Mayors because of my interest for urban planning and how it can improve the standard of living of a city. I believe we can give back to the community that open heartedly accepted us.

I’m into politics and the way the “inner works” of the world. I also love anything related with music.

My City

Lisbon is the very hilly capital city capital of Portugal. It is built on 7 hills being often called as “a cidade das 7 colinas” which translates into the city of the 7 hills. Lisbon has a very rich history dating back to 2nd century B.C. It was a important city for during roman dominance of the area and it remained important all through the colonialist era until today. You can still find a couple of traditional neighbourhoods like Bairro Alto, Mouraria and Alfama which are a great example of portuguese culture. In this narrow road streets you can find Hole-in-the-wall bar where they serve Ginjinha and you can listen to Fado. Lisbon metropolitan area is home to 2.8 million people being by far the biggest metropolitan area in Portugal. Car pollution has been an issue concerning my city. Congestion taxes and restrictions have been implemented preventing old cars from entering the center of town. Lisbon is also a Alpha-level global city and it has agreements with more than 50 cities around the world.

Snapshot

  • Despite the hills Lisbon has been able to successfully install a bike sharing network (GIRA).
